What are Mysheik’s true intentions? And have the Vamdari survived like Serenity? Find out in book four of the Opsona Journey Series.

Excerpt 3:

A myriad of garbled death grunts and pain-filled wails called out into the ever twilight of the Crypt Realm—chaos echoing off dirty rubble stone that nature started to reclaim as ghouls lay slain on display for any who might oppose fate. These were my enemies, demons and ghouls who liked to infest the mortal world with their wrongness. An infection that often seeped into the cracks, but not if you killed them off at the root. That was the plan for my Opsona brethren and myself. I was fulfilling my Opsona duty, helping my brothers invade the Underworld Realms, but not everyone saw me as an asset.

“I found another one trying to get away,” the man standing over me joked as I gasped to gain some air. The large brute of an Opsona struck me down when my back was turned using his lance to choke me from behind, as another Opsona landed a kick to my gut. It was an attack I wasn’t prepared for, and I would surely never make that mistake again.

Three others arrived chuckling at my misfortune, they knew what they were doing was wrong. I wasn’t the enemy, hell I led them here. I opened the gateway so they could take out the ghouls of this part of the Underworld. By doing so I now labeled myself an enemy of my demon brothers, a damned sinner who could never come back. There would be no place in the Underworld I could hide from retribution, and no chance to repent.

The reality of what was about to happen hit hard, and I gritted my teeth trying to hold my demon side back. This would be no time to prove them right, to show I was the monster they thought me to be, but I couldn’t show fear either. Showing fear would only urge them on more.

“You want to be one of us?” one of the men asked, stepping forward, a mocking tone to his voice as he asked his question. This asshole was the leader of the small group.

“We can grant you that wish, can’t we, boys?”

I didn’t like where this was going, but I bit back any response. I wouldn’t give them the pleasure of knowing my rage.

It had been a difficult few years training with the Opsona elder, Rhea. While she accepted me, the others still refused to acknowledge my Opsona blood. I was seen as a demon, a creature of sin. No matter my skill or strength I was still an outcast, but this? I never imagined they would take up arms against me. The Elders would not be pleased, but what punishment would they really face? Probably none—in fact they may even be rewarded for killing me, the bastards.

On cue two of the bigger men of the group restrained each of my arms and kicked my legs to bring me to my knees. A third ripped open my shirt and I growled like the beast I was, delighting in the way he jumped back. Aww, fear. I could smell it on him, making my demon purr with a special hunger. Chuckles from the others sounded for their companions’ frightened retreat. If they only knew what I could do to them.

The leader moved closer as I struggled to break free. It wouldn’t do me any good. Fighting one or two of my brethren I could handle, but five? No, I didn’t have the skills to escape without killing them. Here in the cover of twilight I had the advantage, but it would mean unleashing the demon I could not control. My demon, raging beneath the surface, would surely dismember them. I had to hold it back and take what abuse they were going to dish out.

“You want to be one of us?” ~Cret~

Once upon a time there was a witch and a warlock who fell in love. They lived together in a modest and remote castle, working the land, making essential oils, and giving back to the earth. They were a good witch and warlock who loved their life and wanted nothing more than to share their love and good fortune with others. But most of all, they dreamed of having a tiny magical being of their own. This was not to be. For all their trying, the witch could not become pregnant. They grew herbs to make special teas, mixed up potions for fertility, and even cast spells under the light of the full moon. Nothing worked. The witch’s belly remained empty. The days turned into months, into years, then into decades. A century passed, but no baby came. The witch fell into a deep sadness. She no longer got out of bed and tended to her garden. She no longer sang while strolling through the meadows of wildflowers. She no longer ate until she was full. She cried. She slept. She stared into the nothingness of the night.

Heartbroken to see his love so forlorn, the warlock decided to venture out of the safety of their secluded castle and find a Baba Yaga to heal his wife and give them a child through either light or dark magical means. The day he left, he kissed her and promised to always love her in this world, and the next. He vowed to search eternally for help for his barren wife. He vowed to find a way to give her a child. The witch pleaded with him not to leave. She told him she’d felt something terrible coming his way. He saw it, too, but knew her happiness was more important. She cried and held onto the warlock, but he pushed her away. Before he mounted his stead, he placed a soft kiss on her lips. The warlock embraced the witch’s face in his hands and looked deep into her aqua eyes. He said, “you are my heart. Without you by my side, this muscle in my chest would cease to beat. I will travel to the end of the earth and time to make you happy.” He kissed her again. “If I do not return, always follow your heart.” He removed a long chain that held and small key from his neck and placed it in her hands. “This key opens the lock to the future. It’s been passed down in my family since the beginning of time, bestowed upon those with a purpose to learn. Use it and our love will be for all eternity.”

The witch did not see the warlock alive again.

Book Description:
Evangeline is living the life of a normal teenager until mysterious, severe symptoms begin appearing. After passing out in the middle of a party, life as she knows it spirals beyond her grasp. She is then diagnosed with a rare, genetic blood disorder that causes her body’s white blood cells to kill the red ones. In the delirium of her deteriorating health, a door to a parallel world opens before her; however, once she steps through it, the portal closes, and she is unable to return to Earth.
The place Evangeline now finds herself in is called Terra Nova, a world wherein vampires rule supreme, with no traces of humanity left to speak of. Curious but afraid, she quickly learns that Terra Nova is not the shadow-side of Earth, but rather the tragic result of government experimentation. In order to survive, she must keep her mind open and accept the changes her body is undergoing; soon enough, those who she initially thinks are murderers become her trainers, whose help she must enlist if she ever hopes to return home—and soon enough, a romantic bond begins to bloom.
Meanwhile, Evangeline’s brother and friends back on Earth try to figure out what happened to her, how the government is involved, and how to bring her home. Unbeknownst to any of them is the mysterious outcast Bambi, whose secrecy disguises her power in making a devastating choice: save one world at the risk of destroying the other.

Evangeline stood up and sighed. She started to walk down the street in the direction of the Duke’s house, done her trailing for the night, when she heard a voice behind her, “Did you expect to track someone who is already tracking you?”
She turned to see Josepina standing in the middle of the road in a blue gown with blue and gold embroidery along its hemlines and birds of all sizes and shapes embroidered into every spot and space on it. Looking at the dress Evangeline wondered how Josepina stalked her so inconspicuously. Did she go around town hiding in holes?

“Yeah, I guess I was a little optimistic in my skills,” Evangeline said.

“Not a little,” Josepina said, “You must know something about me now. I could lead his highness in eternal circles, Evangeline. You would have more chances tracking him, actually. So why is it that you hoped to find me?”

“Well, I guess I was just practising tracking...” Josepina was looking at her with an amused smile. Evangeline knew that Josepina could sense if she was full of shit. Obviously Evangeline could have practised on anyone. She changed approaches,

“Well, I guess I’ve never known a lady of...pleasure?”

Josepina’s smile grew broader, “And what do you hope to learn from me?”

Evangeline’s face turned red, “Nothing, actually. I guess I was just curious about you because you have so much more life in you than most people here. You still talk about everything and seem to think about everything. It’s…. rare. And your clothes...how do you do it?”

“That is a much more interesting question than I thought you had,” Josepina said, “the dress...well, I create them out of hunger during the day with whatever materials I find. Crocheting and embroidering is time consuming. A perfect activity. Dressing up is also time consuming. Another perfect activity. Though I think most find the contrast of the bright clothing and their own ugliness something of a depressing reality.”

Josepina looked up at the night sky and then at Evangeline, “I will walk with you to the Duke’s” She began to walk and Evangeline stepped up beside her.

“The way we are now,” Josepina continued, “vampires as you like to call us, is a stagnant way. We cannot change, on the outside or the inside. You have seen that Ehvan can memorize facts, but his mind will always be that of a child. The inner maturation of his brain is related to the physical changes that happen within it. Something that cannot happen in this state. Someone whose mind was not very...developed...before, will not develop much now. They will know more facts. Learn skills. But they will not grow inside as humans.”

“And you?”

“I suppose my goal was always to understand other humans and through that to understand and know myself. I never considered that it was anything unusual, but looking around me now, I see that it is a rare goal.”

“I wonder what I would be like as one of you,” Evangeline said offhandedly.

“An odd thing to wonder after seeing us,” Josepina said, “though the fact that you actually thought to ponder this means that you would do better than most. You have almost no sixth sense ability but you have more depth than most pretty, young girls.

“Thank you. You know, I didn’t think you liked me much, to be honest.”

“I’m still deciding,” Josepina smiled a little shrewdly, “However, you stood in front of a city of beings that could rip you apart and you were able to look at us and speak to us as if we were still people. I respect that. Respect is more important than like.”

Evangeline let a couple minutes pass in silence before she asked the next question,“So, is it really true about the physical intimacy? I mean, is it impossible for you now?”

Josepina looked at her with that half-curious, half-knowing look and Evangeline quickly added, “I’m just wondering since there are some married couples that I have seen...”

Evangeline was doing her utmost to convince her face not to turn red. Of course she wasn’t just curious out of the blue. She was in an unspoken, apparently platonic, bed-sharing arrangement with a male whom she wanted to kick in the head for the majority of each night while at the same time looking forward to each morning in his room. Every day, when she put down her book and climbed under the covers she lay stiff and anxious, wondering if he would lie down beside her, knowing that he occasionally did, but never being awake when it happened.

Josepina’s lips curled into a wide, knowing smile and killed any chance Evangeline had of keeping the colour on her face normal.

Weep, Woman, Weep by Maria DeBlassie - Haunted Halloween Spooktacular

The Ghosts We Carry and How to Banish Them
Have you ever noticed how in haunted house stories or an occult detective tale, there’s always an object that keeps a spirit anchored to a place?  It could be a keepsake from when the ghost was a living being or a terrible artifact use to summon darker entities.  Sometimes it’s a whole room or house, the energy of the people who have lived in it soaking into the very walls.  Other times it’s the memory of a horrific incident that has bled into the earth.
In order to banish the ghost, of course, we have to destroy the object—set it on fire, break it, or, to be less dramatic, let it go or move on from it.
Move out of the haunted house.
Contain the dark occult artifact that can’t be destroyed so that no one will find it (until the inevitable sequel, of course….this is dramatic fiction after all!).
These stories remind us, in one way or another, that the things we carry with us absorb the energy of our experiences.  And that, sometimes, the only way we can move forward is to let those objects go.  Otherwise, we keep that old energy—sometimes toxic energy—around and get stuck, finding ourselves in a time loop of the same draining experiences that first tainted the objects in question.
The Ghosts We Carry
Take, for instance, the story of The Sad Birthday Dress.  It goes like this:  There once was a woman who wanted to feel beautiful.  All day long she was asked to be nothing but a talking head.  But this woman knew she had a heart and hips and a juicy center.  So she bought herself a dress to remind herself that she could be a whole person and not just a shriveled head sitting in someone’s cabinet of curiosities.  And what a dress it was!  It was stunning, with finely spun organic lilac cotton and loud bouncy yellow and white polka dots that told her that she was allowed to have color in her life—that she was allowed to be of color, no need to pass as another kind of pale specter.   The skirt was flouncy and feminine and begged to be flipped up for illicit romance or at least a lively dance.
It was the perfect birthday dress.  So she did what any woman who wanted to feel alive did—she wore it out and ate cake and drank champagne and danced until the weight of the pale city bore down on her and her loud pretty dress didn’t make her feel pretty anymore.  Just sad.  Unspeakably so.  Because, she realized, this dress didn’t make her feel pretty.  It only reminded her that she lived in a place that didn’t want her to be a flesh and blood woman.  A city that was uncomfortable with her long wild hair and her rounded hips and the way the bodice of her dress clung to her breasts.   She knew shame in that dress.  And a sadness that welled up inside her until it became heartbreak.  That heartbreak spread from her body and into the dress as surely as the bubbly drink had spread through her body only moments before.
The woman learned a hard lesson that night:  A dress couldn’t fix a city that treated her like a brown stain on a white shirt.  And cake couldn’t disguise the fact that there was no sweetness for her there. Only loneliness and a bone-deep cold.  The solution was to leave in search of warmer hands and beating hearts.
Eventually, the dress came off.  But the heartbreak stayed.  And every time the woman tried to wear her I Am Beautiful Dress, she inevitably took it off and rehung in her closet, until one day she stopped trying to wear it all together.  It moved to the back of her closet, limp and half-forgotten, like a mediocre date or half-baked wish.  It was no longer her I Am Beautiful Dress.  It was stained with the experience of that night, which is how it became The Sad Birthday Dress.
Years later, when the woman had figured how to be a breathing, living woman and not someone else’s curiosity, she pulled the dress from her closet and her heart broke all over again.  She knew there was no reclaiming the original power of the beautiful bouncy fabric.  Of cake and champagne and moonlight.  In the dress, she saw the pain of her past welling up inside of her.  Its presence was like a ghost reminding her of all the broken things she could never fix. Of the hopeless realization that the thing she wanted—thought she wanted—wasn’t for her and, in fact, had never existed at all. She had been chasing phantoms and, in the process, almost become one herself.
So she packed it up and gave it away in the hopes that it might become what it was meant to be—that I Am Beautiful Dress—for someone else who was ready to pay the price to reclaim that joy in the way she hadn’t been when she had first purchased it.  The weight of that terrible time lifted from her shoulders and the energy in her home felt lighter.
Now the woman has a closet full of I Am Beautiful Dresses.  They are loud.  And they sparkle.  And they have hems ready to be tossed above the knee for dancing and more dancing and things that would make you blush for me to write.   And they all radiate joy.  All because she let go of the thing that was holding her back.  All because she chose to feel the pain of the past and let it go.  All because she chose to be a loud woman with a beating heart in a sun-kissed land and not a phantom shade.
Banishing Ghosts
Lovely little story, isn’t it?  And it’s all true.  I once had an I Am Beautiful Dress that became The Sad Birthday Dress.  And when I gave it away, I was giving myself permission to be more than that sad story.  I could learn from my past and create space for joy in my present.  The truth is, we all have a proverbial Sad Birthday Dress or something that was once a profound piece of armor in our lives that became stained by experience.  Other times, we change—becoming someone that certain objects no longer feel attached to, can no longer nourish.  And in order to keep growing, transforming, evolving, we must let them go.  If we don’t, what once was beautiful or nourishing becomes toxic.  The spirit that won’t move on becomes the ghost that terrorizes the living.
Having recently completed a massive house cleansing—saying goodbye to old ghosts and old selves—I found myself thinking about one of my pieces from Everyday Enchantments, “Letting Go of Past Lives, “ about the things you hold on to even when you are ready to let go of the person you used to be.  It can be scary to let go of the past because, as stagnant as it can make us, it’s also familiar and comforting. That’s why we hold on to so much unnecessary stuff. It keeps us feeling safe—but it also keeps us stuck.  In the end, it’s better to let go and know that you are creating space for new, positive vibes to enter your life (but not necessarily more stuff!).
The first part of banishing ghosts or old selves?  Let go of the objects they are attached to.  Say goodbye to things that don’t bring you joy or that you haven’t used in over a year.   Be conscious of the energy you want in your home and life.  Then be ruthless about protecting it—get rid of anything that doesn’t contribute to your overall sense of well-being.  Ghosts hide behind sentiment and guilt to keep you trapped under their spell.  Low-level spirits are a lot like low-level people: They want you to feel as trapped and miserable as they are, so they’ll do anything to stay in your life.  Best to see them for what they are and move on.
The second part of ghostbusting?  Let go of the troubling energy you’ve been holding onto psychically.  That last one will take a little more time, but letting go of the object that keeps constellating that energy will go a long way to dispersing its psychic impact.  Give yourself permission to heal and move on from sad or seemingly unfinished histories.
The rest will follow.

Book Description:
A compelling gothic fairytale by bruja and award-winning writer Maria DeBlassie.
The women of Sueño, New Mexico don't know how to live a life without sorrows.
That's La Llorona's doing.  She roams the waterways looking for the next generation of girls to baptize, filling them with more tears than any woman should have to hold. And there's not much they can do about the Weeping Woman except to avoid walking along the riverbank at night and to try to keep their sadness in check.  That's what attracts her to them: the pain and heartache that gets passed down from one generation of women to the next.
Mercy knows this, probably better than anyone.  She lost her best friend to La Llorona and almost found a watery grave herself.  But she survived. Only she didn't come back quite right and she knows La Llorona won't be satisfied until she drags the one soul that got away back to the bottom of the river.
In a battle for her life, Mercy fights to break the chains of generational trauma and reclaim her soul free from ancestral hauntings by turning to the only things that she knows can save her: plant medicine, pulp books, and the promise of a love so strong not even La Llorona can stop it from happening.  What unfolds is a stunning tale of one woman's journey into magic, healing, and rebirth.

One time, I was feeling mighty fine and thought I’d try something different. I saw this ad in a magazine where a woman was in an obscenely large bathtub and covered up to the neck in bubbles. This was in a room with a marble floor, and there were candles everywhere, and she had her hair up all nice and a face mask on. Well, I got to thinking a nice long soak after a hard day’s work would be nice.

This was a few months after my run-in with Sherry, and I was trying hard to let myself enjoy things more. It occurred to me after seeing her that her fatal flaw was not believing that her future was right in front of her. Or maybe she was too afraid to take it with both hands. I began to wonder if we didn’t hold back and do half the work for La Llorona with all that we ran from life.

So I bought some bubble bath and made more beeswax candles and set about having myself a spa night. I mean, my bathroom was nowhere near as nice as the one in the picture. My tub was only long enough for me to sit upright and was right next to the toilet, but I made do.

It was lovely. I mean, divine! I could see why fancy women liked this. I put on the radio, and the music was soft and sweet, like the candlelight against the fading day. I was so relaxed, that I was about to fall asleep in that tub.

That was when I felt cold hands grip the soles of my feet and pull me under.
I should have seen it coming. Why willingly linger in a body of water? But I didn’t, and that was how I found myself drowning in bubbles and thrashing around in my tub. It’s also how I learned that evil woman could find me anywhere—and I mean anywhere—so I could never let my guard down.

Her grip was strong. Seemed like the harder I fought, the stronger she got. I was flailing about, my arms searching for anything and everything to hold on to, when I knocked one of those beeswax candles into the tub. To this day, I have no idea why that scared her, but it did. She recoiled something quick at the hiss of the flame when the wax hit water.

I didn’t waste a second—I hoisted myself out of the tub and collapsed on the bathroom floor, choking and sputtering and sopping wet. Took me forever to clean up the mess and cough up all those flower-scented bubbles. My feet were cold and sore for days, with claw marks where her bony fingers hooked into my skin.

Whoever said bubble baths were relaxing was a big fat liar.

Tagline: Bronwyn finds her husband again, who was taken prisoner during the Revolutionary War.  Good fortune seems to finally come their way, but someone from their past seeks to prevent their happiness.  Will they be able to overcome these trying times?
Book Description:
In book three, Bronwyn travels to Great Britain to find her husband Baldwin in prison.  He is released, is introduced to her family, and finds his strength again.  An urgent request to see his mother in Wellingshire, England, changes the course of his future.
Bronwyn and Baldwin travel back to America to join their children and make a new life for themselves.  They have an opportunity to have their very own plantation, but not without obstacles.  False accusations threaten to ruin their happy home.  Will they ever have their happily ever after?

The stagecoach soon reached its destination, stopping at a stagecoach station in Edinburgh, Scotland.

“We have arrived,” Willoughby announced.

Bronwyn looked out the window at her ma’s homeland of Scotland.  It was her first time in Edinburgh and her first time back in Scotland since she was very young.

The tired group unloaded their trunks, and Willoughby suggested they check into an inn and leave their bags so they would not be encumbered by them at the prison.  Bronwyn agreed.

Moira decided to rest at the inn, while Willoughby and Bronwyn walked up the cobblestoned road towards the castle.

Edinburgh Castle stood on top of a hill, built on a huge rock, an ancient volcano.  It was massively big.  Bronwyn had never seen it with her own eyes before.  They were stopped at the castle’s iron gates where Willoughby explained their reason for being there.

“I am an officer with the British Army, Willoughby Wellington, and I am here to see a prisoner.  This is the prisoner’s wife with me, as well.”

The sentry looked them over, looked at a ledger by his side, and agreed to let them in.  “Ye may enter,” he said in a Scottish accent.

Willoughby and Bronwyn walked around the curved road that slowly sloped upward past stone walls and through more arched gates.  They came to a large plaza at the top which offered a grand view of the town below and the cold North Sea.  There was a Governor’s House on one side of the plaza, where gentlemen stood outside chatting.  The plaza was bustling with activity from British soldiers along with local townsfolk.  There was a church, a great hall, and a royal palace here, as well.  It was a city in and of itself.  Bronwyn remembered her Granny telling her that Mary, Queen of Scots, gave birth to her son, King James VI, here at the palace.  It was surreal to finally see it in person.

Bronwyn tried to keep up with Willoughby, who walked quickly, wandering here and there, looking for the prison, asking folks along the way. They were finally guided to Dory’s battery, where they were told they could enter the area where the prisoners were housed.  There was a lot of activity between some townsfolk who were talking to the prisoners through a perimeter fence.

“Over there,” Bronwyn said, pointing at the prisoners.  “Do ye think Baldwin could be one of those men?”

“Let us go and see,” Willoughby said.

They pushed their way through the crowd to see the prisoners, but they didn’t see Baldwin among them.

Bronwyn followed Willoughby over to some stone steps which led to another sentry and a gate.

Willoughby again explained their purpose for being there and they were allowed inside.  The stench and filth inside was overwhelming, nearly enough to make Bronwyn heave.

“Och, Willoughby,” she said sadly.  He held her hand and they were led by a soldier through a dark passageway to an office.  Inside was an officer sitting at a desk, looking over papers.

“What is this?” the officer asked.

“Sir, my name is Captain Willoughby Wellington.  I have just arrived from America after the war.”

“Ah, nasty bit of business, wasn’t it?”

“Well, you see, it is a nasty bit wherein my brother was captured and taken as a prisoner to the

Tower of London.  Yet after the war, he was not released as he should have been but rather was brought here.”

“Are you saying your brother was a Yankee?”

Bronwyn wanted to respond to the man’s disdainful comment, but Willoughby placed a hand on her arm to keep her silent.

“He was, sir,” Willoughby said.

“That is unfortunate,” the officer said.  “Why would you be wanting him out then?”

“Sir, he is my brother, no matter which side of the war he fought on, and he deserves to be released.”

The officer sighed.  “Very well.  What is the name then?”

“Baldwin Wellington.”

“Wellington, Wellington,” the officer said, looking at papers.  “Ah, here it is.  It says he was captured for treason.”

“Treason, sir?” Willoughby said, glancing at Bronwyn.

“Aye, treason.  He had signed an oath to the Crown to fight on our side but then later switched sides to become a Patriot,” he said with disgust.  “Therefore, he committed treason.  He is awaiting sentencing to be hung.”

“No!”  Bronwyn could not be silent any longer.  She felt faint at the distressing news.

“Sir, there must be a mistake here,” Willoughby insisted.  “The war is over and details about treason during such war are immaterial at this time.  I must insist that you release him into my care at once.”

“Let me see what I can do,” the officer said, standing up. “Give me a moment, if you please.  Stay here.”

The officer left the room, closing the door.  Bronwyn sat down in a chair, clutching her heart with her hand.

“I did not come all this way to watch my beloved die,” she said, watching an insect crawl across the floor.  She looked up suddenly with a thought.  “Let’s break him out.”

“Break him out?  We cannot do that, Bronwyn.”

“Please, Willoughby.  They are not going to release him, I just know it.”  She batted away tears in her eyes.

“We do not want to end up in prison ourselves, Bronwyn.  Let us see what the man says.  I will appeal to the king if I must.”

“Verra well,” Bronwyn said, sighing.  She held onto the chair with one hand and bit the skin around her nails on the other hand nervously, trying to be patient.

Willoughby paced back and forth, glancing at a clock every time he passed it.

The officer finally returned.  “We can release your brother, and your husband, Madam, on one condition.”

“What’s that?” Willoughby asked.

“We shall require money for his expenses while he has been here...” he glanced at his papers, “for the three months he has been in our care.  For food, drink, bedding, coals, candles, and anything else he has needed to maintain his health.”

“Very well.  How much would that be?” Willoughby asked.

“Fifty pounds,” the man stated.

That seemed a steep price to Bronwyn and she feared Willoughby would not pay it.

“Done,” Willoughby said, pulling coins from a bag from his pocket.  He counted out the required amount and placed it on the table, sliding it across the table towards him.

“Very good.  Pleasure doing business with you, Captain Wellington.”  The man quickly scooped up the coins and placed them in a drawer.  “If you will follow me, I will show you the way to your Baldwin.”

Bronwyn stood up quickly and followed the two men out the door, down the hallway, down some steps, and down another hallway until they came to the prison cells.  Many men whistled and yelled out obscenities at Bronwyn as she passed.  She looked at each one of them, searching for her husband.

“Ah, here we are,” the officer said.  “Baldwin Wellington, would you please come out.  Today’s your lucky day. You are being released.”

The other four men in the small cell looked back at a gaunt looking, dark-haired man with long hair and beard.  He was pale, held his stomach, and was lying on his side on the floor.  Bronwyn could not tell if it was Baldwin or not.

“Mister Wellington, please come forth,” the officer said again as he unlocked the iron grille door.

“Your brother and wife are here.”

The gaunt man responded immediately, turning his head slowly to look over at the cell door and past it to Willoughby and then Bronwyn.  His eyes watered when he saw her.  She recognized those brown eyes, even in the dim light.

“Baldwin,” she whispered, trying to smile even though he looked like he was barely alive.  It did not matter.  He was alive and she couldn’t wait to hold him in her arms.
Baldwin tried to stand up and fell on wobbly legs.

“Uh, he arrived to us in this condition, I swear to you,” the officer said.  “He had apparently been at the Tower in London for a year.”

“Aye,” Willoughby said.

The officer and Willoughby each grabbed an arm of Baldwin’s and helped him exit the stone vault.  He smelled of urine and vomit, but Bronwyn happily took Baldwin’s arm from the officer.

“Och, mo chridhe,” Bronwyn said, putting her arms around his thin back as the officer locked the cell door.  Happy tears filled her eyes, and joy filled her heart and soul.  At last, she had her husband back.
